Guild for the Grammy

The Writers Guild of America has signed an interim agreement with the producers of the Grammy Awards telecast. The move had been long anticipated since the guild had said last week that it will not picket the ceremony. Patric Verrone, WGA West president, said, “In an attempt to provide a fair contract, we have arrived at this decision on behalf of the fraternity of American Federation of Musicians and American Federation of Television and Radio Artists.

The deal is believed to be modeled as per the ideologies of David Letterman’s production company Worldwide Pants and others. It means that material of the show will be written under a WGA contract giving the union’s blessing to the awards ceremony despite the 3-month-old writers strike.

The announcement made last week that the WGA will not picket the show came after high-profile talent like SAG member Beyonce and Foo Fighters said that they will perform at the show regardless of whether it was officially labeled a struck work or not. News of the interim agreement came after two weeks of intense behind-the-scenes negotiations between various entertainment and music industry guilds to convince the writers’ guild that picketing the show would not serve its best interests.
