As a kid most of us would have cherished those Amul adverts on TV and butter packs! As an adult I still am crazy about them. Thanks to billboard advertising now I can enjoy these ads out of print medium and on a huge scale while being stuck in a traffic jam in Mayur Vihar or passing by Akshardham temple. Well, some of these billboards that I’m sharing here are timed-out but for the sake of good ol’ childhood memories here is a line up of Amul billboards for you all…
August 29th, 2008Conscious Packaging or Conscious Exposing?
The Lush – fresh handmade cosmetics company believes in minimalism it seems! The company’s philosophy of “Conscious Packaging” includes packaging of materials/ products on a strictly necessary basis. In this age where a lot of waste is being generated only by packaging discards itself, the philosophy sure looks great! But how to tell this to your consumers? So, Lush came up with this advertising in aprons campaign where in employees (permanent or hired, I’m not sure on that!) wear only aprons during their duty time! That’s why you see the naked bums of young ladies in the photo above. When I first saw It I thought the store is following the footsteps of Comfort’s nudist ad campaign. But I was wrong! Because the company believes everything else is superfluous so its employees must wear the bare necessary clothing rather packaging to promote this new idea! Wow!

August 2nd, 2008Italian Olympic Team Performed By Freddy
(I move along the fragile border between fear and dream:Lia Parolari )
Freddy-the official sponsor-cum-supplier for Italian team heading for Beijing Olympics have come up with a brilliant advertising campaign. The print ads feature Elisa Santoni (rhythmical dancer), Simone Collio (sprinter), Lia Parolari (gymnast) and Eleonora Lo Bianco (volleyballer). The adverts are of stunning quality and are executed well. Besides the amazing visuals the adverts bear one-liners that reflect the hopes and aspirations of these people. (That part is really touching!) A sportsperson praying and hoping that he/she will give his/her life’s best performance at the forthcoming Olympics.

February 2nd, 2008Levis Succeeds in Being a Misfit Hit!
Levis is back with a bang. Scowling A.D. went to LA to click them with the very dependable, photographer Joseph Rodriguez. Well, if you didn’t know Rodriguez also has the much admired book called ‘Gangs of East L.A’ to his credit. Coming back to the ad campaign, I feel it makes more sense the more pictures your see.
It has been executed so well! Levis had lately begun to lack a sense of exclusivity and identity but now it seems to be back in action. No doubt the ad is very impressive. I liked it a lot though the firing squad and the cheerleaders were a bit weak with so little expression on their faces. The dad is just too good with his cowl.
The ad succeeds because of the personal touch in it. The reactions are real and the world is real too. The ad makes you wonder what exactly does Levis’ range of ‘Original misfits’ do to you to prompt such reactions. And the rebellious part of us will definitely make us try ’em out too.

January 16th, 2008Cheaper no More Better
The more expensive, the better it is! Surprised? Well, that is the pattern with the consumers these days. I am not saying this but the research done by the National Academy of Sciences in California. Volunteers were given sips of wines with fake prices, and it was found that in most instances cabernets thought to be more expensive were enjoyed more.
The experiment explains how deeply the marketing forces impression the mind, sometimes even changing the preferences by just raising the price of a product. Antonio Rengel, who was one of the study authors, said, “This study has just shown us how the expectations we bring to the experience affect the experience itself.” In other words, an attractive and elaborate packaging works extremely well for a product.
But the big question is whether companies are right in pricing their products higher when not giving the consumers their due? Now that is an ethical question, which will have to be constantly checked by the authorities controlling the ad world. Under the façade of prestige, users should not allow any dumb agency to fleece them.
