September 14th, 2008No Tags Attached: It’s Hanes!

Being tagged is what is distasteful to the urban and educated young men and women. Hanes which is now bringing its men’s, women’s and kid’s clothing to India has launched an ad campaign that boldly refutes the existence of ‘tags’. The print adverts have great graphic visuals to offer. And to match the sensibilities of modern youth is the punch line from copywriter- Shivangini Parihar, “Because the world gives you enough tags.” The splendidly done advertisements are designed by Denzil (Creative Director), Timsy Gupta (Art Director) and Pranav & Timsy (Illustrators) from creative agency McCann Erickson (Bombay).

These ads might create a stir among the closed-minded orthodox ancients of yesteryears but they are definitely going to appeal those in cities with a modern outlook towards life. After all, this is one brand of underwear that comes with no tags attached!

A human rights violation ad
China sure has been in the news for all the wrong reasons recently, and Amnesty International denies what first looked like its bit in defaming the Olympic city of the year. According to Amnesty, the intent behind their furious advertisements has been misinterpreted. As the world appreciates the pictorial ads with interesting detailing, even the Chinese bloggers have expressed their appreciation. For the uninitiated, the ads depict atrocities inflicted upon protestors in China brewing up a lot of trouble for the Chinese establishment who is trying everything in its power to keep up a clean image in the wake of the Olympics and the media island created on its grounds.
It is believed that Amnesty international has made a lot of business with China for the Olympics and that is probably why they now disown their creations. That’s about the diplomatic stance of the Amnesty folks. But I was wondering about the effect of the ad being talked about here. People, especially the Chinese, believe that these ads are propelling them to continue with the protests.

While there might be a doubt over the mapping and navigation facilities of Nokia cell phones (esply. model 6220) but there’s no doubt that its advertisement maps the whole world on a huge canvas! The spot (done by Wieden + Kennedy, London) shows pencils, pens, crayons, markers, sketch pens and enthusiastic people who go on drawing the image of the world we live in and share with our loved ones. The idea isn’t something that can be called ‘unique’ but the artwork in the video is good enough. Plus, what interests me the most is the passion with which people of all ages and even kids draw their world on a spread out white sheet.

The simple idea is thus well executed by the following members of the team:
Agency Producer: Lucy Russell; Art Director: Dan Norris
Creative Director: Matt Gooden, Ben Walker; Producer: David Stewart
Director: Antoine Bardou Jacquet; Copywriter: Ray Shaughnessy
DOP: Damien Morisot; Production Company: Partizan, London
Editor: Bill Smedley, Work, London; Art Director: Chris Oddy
Post Production: The Mill, London; Telecine Operator: Paul Harrison
On-line Operator: Barnsley; Music Composer: Wave, London

When was the last time you donated some of your belongings or did charity? In this world of ours there’s a grand canyon between the haves and the have-nots of the society! It’s in our hands the lucky ones to do something for those who are living in extreme poverty. Their penury leaves them malnourished and those badly affected are the children. Please spare a thought and join World Food Programme which urges you to be humane. Their recent ad campaign may seem to be a boring idea to the thick-skinned individuals stricken by materialism. But, sensitive people will surely be moved by these posters titled: Village, Well and Junkyard. After all, these are true images of the unequal ways prevalent in our society.

Next time somebody tells you, “Don’t behave like an animal” don’t get offended! After all, “We’re not that different!” says so, the promotional campaign of Animal Planet series of Sky. These adverts reflect what is so elemental to us humans- our behavior. The latter has similarities with antics found in the animal kingdom.

Agency DDB has created this campaign. Although the idea is not a new one (esply. for Animal Planet) but it has been well executed. It is interesting to watch and find out with which animal species we share an archetypal connection in terms of relationships, brotherhood, fishing and even politics!
