Sunday, June 29th, 2008

Each one of us spends a lot of time pondering upon and wondering about what life is?
It’s an open-ended question which agency Grey London has tried to solve for its client Fortis. Result is a 45second long simple, effective and thoughtful commercial titled “Life is a Curve”. With a simple line-drawing animation and meaningful voiceover, the advert explains that life is not a rolling dice of fate but a curvaceous line that joins the ups and downs that we face daily.

Our decisions affect the course of life. It reminds us that perhaps its best to stop, think and evaluate ourselves and our decisions when we feel stuck up. It’s good to remember that life is hard by the yard but its cinch by the inch. The ad says, Fortis helps you every single inch of your life in getting you where you have always wanted to be! For a quick lesson you can watch the spot on YouTube.

Hulu

Watch your favorites. Anytime. For free.

Convergence is the buzz-word these days and the latest offering being Hulu. The latter is a website offering free, high-quality streaming video of TV shows and movies, primarily from NBC and FOX and their cable networks. In short it s a platform where web and TV converge. Launched in March 2008, Hulu has gained huge popularity within a period of few months. The streaming video site enables one to watch one s favorite TV shows, video clips and movies. The service is free and ad-supported. One can register an account as well. The site however does not offer video downloading for offline viewing as done by YouTube. Also, currently Hulu videos are offered only to users in the U.S. With Hulu just a click away one can watch episodes of TV shows like The Simpsons, Arrested Development, Family Guy, Saturday Night Live and American Dad!. In June 2008, Hulu added two Comedy Central shows: The Daily Show and The Colbert Report.

As the popularity of Hulu rises, TV programmers have started thinking on the lines of producing low-cost programmes exclusively for this site. What remains to be tested is the fact that will Hulu outperform YouTube? At this nascent stage it would be too early to give an answer in a mere yes or no. The site surely needs to have a bigger reach in order to compete with YouTube.
